Obituary: Carol J. Riutta

Carol Jean Riutta, 80, a resident of Hancock, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021, at UP Health System – Marquette following a short illness.
Carol was born on July 20, 1940, in Houghton, the daughter of the late Leonard and Elma (Korsman) Riutta. She was raised in Houghton and graduated from the Hancock High School.

Carol moved to Waukegan, Illinois where she worked as a housekeeper. She met Epi Martinez while in Illinois and had 3 children. Carol then returned to the Copper Country and began working as a nurse’s aide for Cypress Manor in Hancock. She eventually took a job at Suomi College where she worked as a housekeeper until her retirement. Carol was a member of the Pelkie Laestadian Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking and reading. She had a great love for animals and was always known to have a great love for her family and church.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her 3 children; Eugene Martinez-Riutta, Juanita Midelton-Riutta and Maria Riutta.

Her grandchildren; Cody, Parker, Brady, Whitney, Cassie, Carol and Gene.
Her brothers; Melvin(Madeline), Irving, Dennis(Sherry Johnson), Michael, Roger(Kris), Paul(Kathy), Anthony(Liisa), Steven(Diane), Glen(Bernice), Mark, and Dan.

Her Sisters; Brenda(Michael) Pelto and Gail Kauppila.

She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private family funeral service will be held 11am Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the Pelkie Laestadian Lutheran Church with Pastor James Frantti to officiate. A visitation will be held from 10am until the service begins.
