Carl James Sorvala, “Jim” “Jimmy” of Laurium, Michigan passed away peacefully on October 17th, 2022 with his loving family by his side. Jim was born on June 30, 1932 along with his twin sister Junie at the family home in Jacobsville, Michigan. Jim attended the Jacobsville Schoolhouse and attended Lake Linden High School through the 10th grade when he had to leave to help work on his father’s strawberry farm. Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955. He served in the heavy mortar company, was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska and was honorably discharged as private first class in 1957. He then served in the Army Reserve in Calumet, Michigan for two years. Jimmy married Mabel (Kuru) on August 15, 1959. They were blessed with 63 years together.
Jim loved the outdoors, enjoyed gardening, working in the yard, was a wonderful artist, and had a mind for mechanical design. He invented a motorized “Yooper Scooper” that he used every winter at their home in Laurium. Mostly Jim loved to spend time with his family.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents Waino and Ida Sorvala, his brothers Robert Sorvala, Clarence Sorvala, and Harold Sorvala, and his sisters Marion Nita Wiitanen, Margaret Tusovaara, and Carol June Kilpela. Jim is survived by his loving wife Mabel L. Sorvala, his only daughter Cheri (Jerry) Simpkins, brother-in-law Roy (Nita) Wiitanen, sister-in-laws Joyce (Clarence) Sorvala, and Florence (Robert) Sorvala, and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Jimmy will be deeply missed. We await the day we will see you again in Heaven. God’s peace.
A service for Carl Sorvala will be held at Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, Michigan on Monday, October 24, 2022 at 11:00 am with a visitation from 10:00-11:00 am. Burial will take place immediately following the service at the Jacobsville Cemetery with military honors.
