Obituary: Betty Ann (Mytty) Pyhtila

Betty Ann (Mytty) Pyhtila passed away on Friday, July 2, 2021 at Mill Creek Memory Care in Marquette. She was born in Highland Park, MI on January 20, 1947. She graduated from Warren High School in 1965 and continued her education at Michigan Technological University where she earned a degree in accounting. She married William Pyhtila, Jr in L’Anse in 1974. Betty Ann worked in the legal field for many years before deciding to return to school to become a teacher. She earned a B.S. degree in Secondary Education and Master’s in Education Administration from NMU. Betty Ann taught in L’Anse and Baraga Area Schools, Sacred Heart Elementary, as well as Baraga County Maximum Security Prison.

She was very involved in United Lutheran Church throughout the years. She taught Sunday school, ran the youth group and was the church treasurer for a number of years. She was a member of the L’Anse Area School Board and the Baraga County Shelter Home Board. After her retirement she volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Pyhtila, Jr; parents, Richard & Ellen (Maki) Mytty; stepmother, Mary Mytty; and brother, David Mytty. She is survived by her children, Matthew (Wendy) Pyhtila and Joy (Brandon) Turunen; grandchildren, Payton, Carter & Lindsey Turunen, Anja & Samara Pyhtila; brothers, Daniel (Judy) Mytty and Timothy (Lisa) LaFrance; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Mytty and Susan Montgomery; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial funeral service for Betty will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at United Lutheran Church, L’Anse with Pastor John Ansell officiating. The family will greet friends at church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to United Lutheran Church or the Baraga County Shelter Home in Betty’s memory.
