Obituary: Bernice Mary Nicholson

As received from the O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home:

Bernice Mary Nicholson, 102, of Hancock, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Canal View – Houghton County.

She was born at home on November 30, 1919 in Chassell to the late Joseph and Mary Helen (Savard) Poisson. She was a graduate of Chassell High School and worked as a healthcare giver and nurses aide for many local families, and as a hospice volunteer until she was 94.

She was married on August 17, 1940 to George H. Nicholson. He preceded her in death after 64 years of marriage.

Bernice was known for her beautifully hand knit children’s sweaters. Many local families have had generations of children that have worn sweaters knit by her. Family was everything to her as she was a huge part of her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives. We truly treasured her and each of us know how lucky we were that she was Gram.

Bernice was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock for almost 80 years. She also belonged to the church Prayer Shawl knitting group for a long time.

Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by 7 siblings, a daughter, Nicky Caspary, and a son-in-law, William T. Caspary.

She is survived by grandchildren Kelly (Burt) Arola, Leanne Caspary, and Danielle (Frank) Hawthorne; great grandchildren Stephan Caspary, Kate (Dan) Monti, Allison Weidmayer, Gage Hawthorne, Jacob (Grace) Weidmayer, and Brody Hawthorne; Great-great-grandson, Merrick Monti; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation and services will be private and held at a later date.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Copper Country Humane Society, P.O. Box 453, Houghton, MI 49931.
