Bernice June Haapala, age 83 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2021 unexpectedly at her home.
She was born February 28, 1938 in L’Anse, MI daughter of Arnie and Martha (Walitalo) Haanpaa. Bernice attended school in L’Anse. She married Uhro Haapala on October 26, 1958 in L’Anse.
Bernice worked as a nurses aide in Marquette, Gossarts in Ishpeming and was a caregiver to friends and family in need.
Bernice was a member of the United Lutheran Church in L’Anse, VFW Auxiliary, DAV Auxiliary, Baragaland Senior Citizens, Herman Historical Society, and a proud TOPS member. Bernice loved spending time with family and friends, volunteering, listening to music (she looked forward to the Aura Jamboree each year), dancing, crocheting pillows, baking, and playing Bunco.
She is survived by her brother Bill (Pat) Haanpaa of Herman; sister-in-law Martha Haanpaa of Herman; numerous nieces, nephews and special friends. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Uhro Haapala; brothers, Dannie, Terry, and Bob Haanpaa.
A graveside service for Bernice’s family and friends will be held Tuesday Aug 3, 2021 at 1 pm at the Herman Cemetery with Rev John Ansell officiating. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
