Beatrice J. Harju, age 89, of L’Anse, MI passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at Bayside Village, L’Anse. She was born in Highland Park, MI on October 7, 1930 the daughter of the late John William “Bill” and Signe Helvi (Rinta) Nakkula. Beatrice graduated from L’Anse High School. She married Oswald Harju on February 2, 1952. Beatrice was a member of United Lutheran Church, L’Anse, was a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Superintendent, served on the church council, the Altar Guild, Sarah Circle, Quilting Group, made Latch hook wall hangings for the church and was a member on numerous other committees of the church. She was also the treasurer of the Women’s UP Trappers Association Auxiliary, the Aura Hospital Auxiliary, Community Coupon Project and the SHARE program. Beatrice also sold real estate for Century 21, sold Artex paints and was a Bishop sewing instructor.
Beatrice is survived by her loving son Bruce (Marie) Harju of L’Anse, daughter-in-law Karen Harju of Toledo, OH, grandchildren Paul, Nicole, Amanda (Douglas) Bradley and Joshua, sisters Kathleen Lukas of Shelby Township, MI and Barbara DesLaurier of L’Anse, sister-in-law Nancy Harju of Golden, Colorado and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Ricky, and a sister Marjorie Majeski.
Funeral services for Beatrice will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, October 11, 2019 at United Lutheran Church, L’Anse with Pastor John Ansell officiating. The family will greet friends at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Immediately following the funeral service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the church. Interment will take place in the Aura Cemetery.
