Arnold “Arnie” John Putala, age 79 of Baraga, MI, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 with family by his side.
He was born July 21, 1942 in Hancock, MI, son of Arvo and Wilma (Pirkola) Putala. Arnie was raised in Keweenaw Bay and graduated from Baraga High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. National Guard in 1962 during the Detroit Riots. He married Sharon Fish on January 25, 1964 in L’Anse. Arnie worked for Celotex Corp as a laborer for 20 years and then as a supervisor for 20 years.
Arnie was very active in the community. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and was a choir member. He served as the President of U.P. Whitetails of Baraga County and was also a member of Turkey Federation, Ottawa Sportsman Club, and the American Legion Post 444. Arnie was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending time on the family farm. He took great pride in growing his gardens.
He is survived by his wife Sharon Putala of Baraga; sons, Lane (Dawn) of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Daryl (Janelle) of Baraga, Craig (Amanda) of Dickinson, North Dakota, Keith (Allison) of Las Vegas, Nevada; brothers, Pete Putala of Escanaba, Steve Putala of El Paso, TX; sister Patricia Putala of L’Anse; eight grandchildren, Misty, Nicholas, Grant, Melissa, Jake, Easton, Nicole, Nathan; three great grandchildren, Evelyn, Faith, Harmony; two great-great grandchildren, Carver, and Oliver.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 19th from 11-2:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at 2:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service with Rev. Julie Belew officiating. A luncheon and fellowship will follow at the American Legion in Baraga. Burial will be in the Keweenaw Bay Cemetery at a later date. Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
