Our dear mother, Ann Theresa Newman, 91 passed away peacefully with family by her side at Portage Pointe on November 6, 2021. Ann was born on July 29, 1930, the daughter of Samuel and Anna Luzaich. She was raised in Calumet and attended the local schools until the family moved to Detroit for several years. Ann won the Deroit Metropolis Girls Spelling Bee in 1942. Later, when they moved back to Calumet she met and married the love of her life, William “Bill” Newman. Together they raised nine children and enjoyed 57 years of marriage. Bill preceded her in death in 2006. Ann was a dedicated mother and homemaker to her family. After her children got older she worked outside of the home for several years. After retirement she was the bookkeeper for the family business People’s Choice and helped out in the office of Newman’s Appliance. Ann was a people person who loved to entertain at her home and the Eagle River camp. She hosted many Newman and Meneguzzo reunions for her loving relatives. Her famous pasties she made for everyone are still savored and fondly talked about to this day. She had a very strong faith and carried it out in everything she did. No task was too big for her to tackle. Her words of wisdom and countless llife sayings will live in the family. Preceding her in death was her husband Bill, daughters Ann (Ree) and Paula and granddaughters Sarah and Kelly, her parents and three brothers, Sam, Emil, and Ray Luzaich, and a son-in-law, Fred Schafer.
Surviving are her children, Bill (Carrie) Newman, Sherry (Bob) Hansen, Valerie (Mike) Teddy, Gerard (Chris) Newman, Jim (Kari) Newman, Nikki (Pete) Alger and Eric (Matt) Newman. Also surviving are her brother-in-law Ed (Anne) Newman and son –in-law Denny (Paula) McKaig and sisters-in-law Judy Luzaich, Doris Luzaich and Bonnie Luzaich, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special friends include Donna Ryan, Mary Ann Bammert, and Doreen Aird. Ann is also survived by her fifty loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their spouses whom she loved dearly. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to Dr.Bonnie Hafeman, Green Tree Assisted Living and Portage Pointe employees for their wonderful loving care for Ann.
Friends may call at the Ryan Funeral Home on Thursday, November 11th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, November 12th at the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Fr.Paul Manderfield and Deacon Art Stancher to officiate. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the charity of your choice.
