Houghton – Betty Voght, 97, a resident of The Bluffs in Houghton, passed away on July 23, 2022 after a brief illness. Betty was born at the family home in Hancock on December 29, 1924, the daughter of James Arnott Hogg from Scotland and Mary Kate (Scales) Hogg from Ireland. She graduated from Hancock High School in 1942 and then worked for several years as a Michigan Bell telephone operator where she made so many lifelong friends.
On October 25, 1947, Betty married William P. ‘Bill’ Voght of Houghton and together they raised eight children while she also served on the local school board, volunteered with the Boy and Girl Scouts, the local League of Women Voters and several other organizations. Bill preceded her in death in 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son Paul; five brothers, John, Francis, James, William and George and her sister Mary along with several sisters- and brothers-in-law.
Betty is survived by her children, Mary (Bob, deceased) Strong of Beverly Hills, MI; Margaret (Jim) Costello of Central Lake, MI; Edward Voght of Houghton; Ellen Thacher (Fred Hilterman) of Houston, TX; Louise (Doug) Terrell of Houghton; Jack (Laura) Voght of Marquette; and Alice (John) Gmutza of Sterling Heights, MI. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Emilie (Papke) Hogg as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
At her request, Betty will be cremated and will be buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton during a private memorial. Arrangements are being handled by the O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home of Hancock.

The family would like to thank the health care providers who helped to make Betty’s last few years so enjoyable. An additional thank you to all her good friends and neighbors over the years, with a special appreciation to Betty’s pinochle buddies at The Bluffs.
