Obituary: Andrew C. (Andy) Curto

Calumet-Andrew C. (Andy) Curto 85, passed away on Friday March 1, 2019 at the Green Tree of Hubbell. He was born in Calumet on March 21, 1933, a son of Peter J. and Nettie Curto and attended the Calumet Public Schools. He was a member of the Company A 107th Engineers of Calumet, and served in Korea and Okinawa during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star and the National Defense Medal. Andy served in the U.S. Air Force with the 307th Bomb Wing from McDill AFB, Florida. Following his service, he worked on the great lakes ore carriers for many years. Andy is believed to be the last known sailor from the Calumet area to have served on the Edmund Fitzgerald. He was also employed by the Copperama Gift Shop in Houghton and Calumet. He was the first charter member of the Houghton County Historical Museum. Andy spent many winters in Thunder Bay, Ontario and Lake Worth Florida. Andy’s number one hobby was collecting historic photos. At one time he had the finest and largest photo collection of Copper Country places and people. The Keweenaw National Historical Park is in possession of many of them. He is survived by his sister, Eleanor Gasparovich of Lake Linden and many nieces and nephews. Andy was preceded in death by his brothers James, John, Norman, and sisters Eunice, Marion, Mary and Carol Lee. Graveside services will be held at the Lake View Cemetery in May.
