Obituary: Alvin Turnquist

Alvin Richard Turnquist, Jr., 88 of Ahmeek, Michigan died on December 28, 2021. He was also known as sonny, slim, dad, grampa and great grampa.
Alvin was born in Calumet, Michigan on July 15, 1933 to Alvin and Ethel (Chenoweth) Turnquist. He later moved to Detroit and spent his school years there. In 1953 he was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War. In 1955 he returned to the Keweenaw and married the love of his life Claire (Mihelich) Turnquist.
He was employed and worked as a hard rock miner for C&H Mining Company until its closing in 1968, CCI Mather B iron mine in Negaunee, White Pine Copper Mine, Homestake Mining Co. and retired from Michigan Tech University.
In 1968 he built a camp in Lac la Belle which his family and friends enjoyed for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Margaret, a brother Jim, and a great grandson, Louie.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Claire l. (Mihelich) Turnquist, 7 children, Jeff (Mary) Turnquist of Atlantic Mine, Mich. , Karen (Mike) Foster of Seattle, Wash., Jim (Susan) Turnquist of Marengo, Wisc., Janine (Steve) Hentrich of St. Clair Shores, Mich., David (Ann) Turnquist of Marengo, Wisc., Sandy (Mark Mezydlo) Turnquist of Mohawk, Mich., Leslie Turnquist of Ahmeek, Mich., one brother Jerry Turnquist of Plymouth, Mich., and a special friend Steve Danis of Trap Rock Valley. 27 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and lots of friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday December 31, 2021 at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m until the time of the service on Friday December 31, 2021
