Alfred “Fred” LaBine, age 72, a resident of Calumet Township, passed away from cancer on Monday, October 3, 2022, at the Omega House in Houghton.
Fred was born December 17, 1949 in Hancock, MI to local attorney Paul Welden LaBine and Charlotte LaBine (Ifland) and attended Houghton High School, graduating in 1968. He attended both Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University with a passion for music and the arts.
Fred played in several local bands in the 60s and 70s, including Dodge Street and the Kinetics bringing pleasure to many in the Red Owl parking lot, The Teen Center, Spotted Lion and many other venues. He also enjoyed rides to visit Lake Superior, in particular Bucky’s. A unique individual and artist who not only fed peanuts and built playgrounds for chipmunks, but made child-sized canoes, could rock the church pipe organ and painted breathtaking landscapes. Fred inspired others to see the wonder in everything around us. He will always be remembered for his intelligence, love of adventure, sense of humor, and extraordinary musical talent.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Charlotte “Sherry” Anne Hellman. He is survived by his brother, Paul Anthony LaBine (Anna) of Chicago, IL, and his beloved son, Paul Alfred LaBine (with second wife Mary Goodell Miller) of Hancock, MI.
