Obituary: Aldrick “Al” Danford Sirard

Aldrick “Al” Danford Sirard, age 87, of L’Anse, Michigan passed away on Thursday, July 28th, 2022 at his home with his family by his side.  

He was born September 11, 1934 in Hancock, MI son of Joseph and Lou “Lulu” (Elmblad) Sirard. Al graduated from L’Anse High School in 1952 and then earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Michigan Tech University. He married Barbara Brazeau on September 3, 1966 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in L’Anse.  Al worked for various construction companies, working in 16 states. He worked the last 35 years with Cherne Contracting Corporation until he and Barbara moved back to L’Anse and retired in 2008.

Al enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, playing pinochle with his grandchildren, and spending time with his family, especially during the holidays when he orchestrated a turtle and peanut brittle making day.   He was an avid Detroit Lions and Tigers fan.  He enjoyed participating in a hundred-year-old family tradition of making maple syrup in Baraga.  When his wife Barbara was volunteering at Sacred Heart Catholic School, he enjoyed bringing cookies and ice cream to the students who referred to him as “Big Al”.  

Surviving are his wife Barbara Sirard of L’Anse; sons, Gene (Cindy James) Sirard of L’Anse, Mike (Joanne) Sirard of Duluth, MN; daughters, Lou (Steve Hilbert) Sirard of Darnestown, MD, Gayle (Dave Dlabal) Sirard of New York, NY; Allison (Dan) Casey of Arnold, MD; brothers, Joseph (Betty) Sirard of Burlington, WI, Jerry (Mary) Sirard of L’Anse; grandchildren, Cory, Melissa, Crystal, Xavier, Quinn, Gabe, Aiden, Declan.

Preceding him in death are his brothers, Roger, Ed and Miles Sirard; sisters, Annette (John) Schaefer, Emmy Lou (Paul) Roy; daughter-in-law Marilyn Sirard; and grandson Mikey.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 1st from 6-8:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home.  His funeral mass will be on Tuesday, August 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Fr. Corey Litzner officiating.  Burial will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.  A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
