Lina K. Hogback

Chassell

             Lina Katrina Hogback, age 97, a resident of the Medora House at Portage Pointe passed away December 14, 2017. She had also lived at Arbor Green & Heritage Manor in Houghton as well as in Chassell for most of her life.

             She was born May 9, 1920, the daughter of John and Kate(Jaskari) Makela. When Lina was 2 weeks old, she traveled by boat to Duluth, MN with her mother and sister Miriam. She returned to Chassell when she was 7 years old.

            Lina started school at age 4 and graduated as valedictorian from Chassell in 1937. She worked at the Douglass House after high school, then married Wilho Hogback on September 26, 1940. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1979. When Wilho was in the Army, she worked at Michigan Bell in Detroit until 1949, when they returned to Chassell. Lina became a licensed practical nurse later in life and worked at the hospital in L’Anse for 16 years.

            She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Chassell for many years and was also in the Buellwood Weavers. Lina enjoyed weaving placements and mug rugs and crocheting doilies and snowflakes, taking part in many craft sales over the years. The day of the sale brought her so much joy. Sunday night dancing at the Eagles in South Range was the highlight of her week. She always said she left her aches and pains at home when she was on the dance floor.

            Preceding Lina in death were her parents, a brother Elmer Makela and sisters Miriam Makela and Erma Burkman. Surviving are her brother Paul(Diane) Makela of Chassell, niece Susan Wiles of Houghton, nephews Ken Burkman,  Darrel Makela and Craig Makela of California and Duane(Tiffany) Makela of Chassell along with numerous great nieces, nephews and relatives in Finland.

            At Lina’s request, there will not be a public service and cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held in the Lakeside Cemetery at a later time.
