The Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region has partnered with Western Upper Peninsula schools to provide fresh healthy food to local students. WUPPDR will work with the Copper Country Intermediate School District and the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District over the next two years to implement the Farm to School Program inside cafeterias. The Farm to School initiative program will support professional development for teachers, School Garden mini-grants, and community events, and establish the infrastructure for the sustainable long-term growth of the program. The Western UP Farm to School program is supported by the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region, Michigan State University Extension, Michigan Technological University, the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, the Upper Peninsula Food Exchange, Ryan Street Community Gardens, Pewabic Street Community Gardens, Calumet Community Gardens, and local farmers and food producers.
