Last night in Franklin Township residents and members of adjacent communities learned of a special opportunity that could come to the Copper Country. Right now along the Portage Canal up through Lake Linden there is the decommissioned MDOT railway that has been used in a informal way by many residents to take walks, ride bikes and recreate near their homes. While plans are in a very early stage, there are clear benefits to installing a walk able trail system near and connected to various communities. As such trail systems help increase the quality of life and economic opportunities in an area.
Brad Barnett of the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau helped WUPPDR, KEDA, and the DNR to facilitate that meeting and noted that the in formal trial authority behind the idea of the project wants to gauge community interest in connecting a 10 mile non-motorized trail from Hancock to Lake Linden.
For more information on what a Copper Country Heritage Trail system could look like or if you want to show support for such a project reach out to the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Developments Region if you are interested in connecting the communities of Hancock to Lake Linden.
