The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department urges residents to receive updated vaccines amid new measles cases in Michigan and an Outbreak in Florida.
Families or individuals who will or have been traveling recently for spring break have an increased likelihood of bringing a vaccine-preventable disease back home. Houghton County currently has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state of Michigan. The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department urges community members to visit with the clinician to make sure they are up to date on vaccines before traveling outside of the area.
Vaccine-preventable diseases include mumps, measles, rubella, whooping cough, chicken pox, meningitis, pneumonia, and polio. These diseases can spread quickly in a community, and one or more cases put the county at risk for an outbreak.
