Witmer, GOP Agree – Stealing Mail Is Wrong

They can’t agree on a budget, or how to fix the roads, but there is one important issue that Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer and legislative Republicans can agree on – it’s not nice to steal people’s mail.

You might think that stealing mail has been illegal in Michigan for all these years. It has… sort of… if the mail has enough value to be covered by the general criminal code. Actual mail theft was exclusively a federal crime… until yesterday.

Whitmer signed two bills… both written by Republicans… that made mail theft illegal under state law… with terms and penalties that almost exactly mirror the federal statutes that have been in place for years.

Bipartisanship may be on life support, but it hasn’t stopped breathing. Yet.
