With Roads Done Lawmaker Shift Focus

With work on a roads funding package done, state lawmakers will now move on to some other big ticket issues.

Governor Rick Snyder this week signed into law a $1.2 billion bill package to fix Michigan’s roads, a plan that was years in the making.

He says now lawmakers will tackle some other big issues, like energy policy reforms and a plan to help the deeply in-debt Detroit Public Schools.

Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof says there could be some legislation on the DPS situation when the legislature returns in December, but he’s not putting a timeline on either the energy package or DPS.

He says he wants to make sure those issues well and that it’s the right policy to move Michigan forward.

The governor has proposed a plan to get DPS out of debt that will cost $715 million over the next ten years.
