A company that wanted to build a huge open pit iron mine in northern Wisconsin has given up. Gogebic Taconite LLC notified the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources last week that it was withdrawing its application, and had closed its office in Hurley. The company had hoped to dig a four-mile trench in the Penokee Hills east of Mellen. They have told the state that they will continue to maintain exploration sites and test wells installed during their feasibility phase. State land in the area that had been closed to the public has now been reopened.
