Catholic Schools, like Sacred Heart in L’Anse, are holding events throughout this week to celebrate what sets them apart from traditional education.
Sacred Heart is one of nine Catholic Schools in the Upper Peninsula and has classes for students from Early 5 Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Sacred Heart School Principal Christy Miron said, “We are very much focused on growth. We’ve been seeing our enrollment steadily increase over the last several years, so our current enrollment is 61 students. We are looking to just continue that trend. Part of that is that we are implementing a classical curriculum, it’s a liberal arts education, along with the other eight schools in the diocese.”
In addition to their studies, students also have daily prayers and take part in Mass twice a week.
An agreement with L’Anse Area Schools provides opportunities for students to participate in band and athletics.
Students do not need to be Catholic but the faith underlies everything that the school does or teaches–something they are unabashed about.
Miron said, “We are Catholic and we are proud of that and without being ‘in your face’ about it, but we don’t compromise our own beliefs to satisfy public opinion.”
As part of National Catholic Schools Week, Sacred Heart is hosting a week long open house so people can stop by and get a fresh look at Catholic education for themselves.
