A historic building in downtown Houghton will soon been vacant when the bank inside closes next month.
Wells Fargo Bank on Shelden Avenue will close its doors for good at noon on August 2nd.
Company Spokesperson Steve Carlson said it was not an easy decision to make or one that they take lightly, saying Wells Fargo is constantly evaluating their store network and this process leads to both expansion and consolidations.
In the case of the Houghton Main store, Carlson said it simply comes down to proximity, since they have another store less than a mile away.
Carlson also said Wells Fargo will work with affected employees to try and find opportunities for them in Houghton. If they are unable to find them another position internally, those employees may be eligible to participate in the company’s plan for separation benefits.
Customers at their main branch downtown will be directed to their Houghton University location on College Avenue.
The iconic former Houghton National Bank building, erected in 1887, will be put up for sale.
