Health officials are worried about the safety of the waters at Hubbell Beach and other recreational areas along Torch Lake,
The Michigan Department of Community Health has conducted an evaluation of conditions in the area and they have serious concerns about potential health hazards being present at the Hubbell Beach area.
The concerns include physical hazards posed by solid waste from a former garbage dump adjacent to the beach area washing up in the beach sand, as well as elevated levels of heavy metals in the beach sand.
The Torch Lake Township Board has decided to post warning signs at the beach area to inform those who may want to swim in the area of the possible hazards.
