For the past 20 years the DNR in Michigan has collected frog and toad surveys to track the population and is currently looking for volunteers to help with this year’s survey in the spring.
Deputy Public Information Officer for the DNR John Pepin says, “What it is, is each spring volunteers go out and they help us by counting along defined routes. Volunteers will go to these places and they listen for frogs and toads, and then they estimate what the prevalence is of those frogs and toads at those sites and then log it.”
According to the DNR declining populations of frogs, toads and other amphibians have been documented worldwide since the 1980s.
The organization says that studies suggest amphibians are disappearing due to habitat loss, pollution, disease and collection.
After two decades of data collecting, the DNR can finally begin analyzing it to see if there are any trends.
