Volunteer Drivers Needed To Take Veterans To VA Appointments

IRON MOUNTAIN – The Oscar G Johnson VA Medical Center serves Veterans throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as well as those living in ten counties in Northern Wisconsin.  The Disabled America Veteran (DAV) Van System is part of the VA’s Veterans Transportation Network and assists transporting Veterans to their medical appointment in Iron Mountain.  Last year 147 volunteer drivers transported 2,606 patients over a 288,000 miles.

Currently, there is a need for volunteer drivers in the Houghton/Hancock area, and the VA medical center is reaching out to fill this need.  “The Houghton/Hancock has a long history of providing this service to our Veterans. We have some remarkable volunteers from this area and anticipate seeing this continued dedication in the future.” said Greg Weiss, Chief of Voluntary Service at the VA medical center.

The area coordinator schedules the drivers and passengers for runs to Iron Mountain.  Anyone interested in joining this volunteer force to help our Veterans get to their medical appointments can find more information for this program by calling the Houghton County Veterans Service Officer at (906) 482-0102.
