Volleyball District Semifinals Tonight – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In the high school volleyball tournament district semifinals tonight…
• In Division Four, District 98, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Baraga, and Chassell plays at Jeffers. Both matches will start at 7:00.
• In Division Four District 97 at Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek faces Wakefield-Marenisco at 5:30, and Ironwood plays Ontonagon at 7:00.
• In Division Three, Hancock entertains Ishpeming at 6:00. Calumet will host Westwood at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Two, Houghton will play at Escanaba at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Negaunee will play at Kingsford in the other district semifinal.

Ironwood dominated the All-Copper Mountain Conference volleyball honors, with Alaya Ruotsala named Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year. Lisa Fechter was honored as Coach of the Year, and the Red Devils were named Team of the Year.

Local members of the Elite Team include Cori Jahfetson from Baraga, Sara Johnson and Hanna Larson from Jeffers, and Makennah Uotila from Ontonagon.

Additional members of the Copper Country Division First Team include Maddie Bushell from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Trisha Pietila from Chassell, Kaeda Rajala from Jeffers, and Sophia Rice from L’Anse. Kate Borseth from Ewen-Trout Creek was placed on the Porcupine Mountain Division First Team.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team’s season ended with a 3-1 loss at Ferris State in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament yesterday. Stephanie Yeager scored the Huskies’ only goal on a penalty kick.

College Hockey

The Finlandia men’s hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie at Northland College last night. Owen Schmidt scored both Lions goals, and P.J. Donnelly and Alex Walsh each recorded two assists. Dakota Meyer made 29 saves.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team plays an exhibition at Wisconsin-Green Bay tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Capitals tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons play at Milwaukee tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Phillies blasted five home runs, and blanked the Astros 7-0 last night. Philadelphia leads the World Series 2-1, with game four tonight in Philly.

Changes continue with the Detroit Tigers. Lloyd McClendon will not return as manager at Triple-A Toledo next season. The parting is said to have been mutual, with team officials looking to move in a different direction, and McClendon hoping to land a major league job.

NFL

The Lions have traded tight end T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings. Hockenson was the eighth pick in the 2019 draft. He made the Pro Bowl in 2020. In exchange, Detroit will receive a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick. The Vikings also get fourth-round picks in 2023 and 2024.
