"Voices" Program Empowers Teenage Girls To Rise Above Their Challenges

Teenage girls face many challenges as they grow up.

Physical changes and unrealistic expectations can lead to self-image concerns.

Outpatient Councilor Dawn Reagor said, “As a result, it often leads to a negative self-image of themselves, thinking that, ‘Oh, gee!  I’m too short, I’m too fat, I’m too tall, I don’t have the right complexion.’”

“Voices”. a program being started by the Great Lakes Recovery Centers in Houghton, is geared toward adolescent and young adult girls ages 14 to 19.

It will help them to identify healthy relationships, avoid substance abuse, develop a positive self-image and work toward future goals in a positive manner.

Reagor said, “There’s so many things out there—peer pressure, substances, stress, coping skills, making those decisions about college—that just put a lot of stress on teenage, adolescent, young adult girls and this is way for them to constructively work through this and go on to be a—have a future that’s happy and healthy.”

VoicesThe program was made possible by a grant from the Keweenaw Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council.

The group will meet at Houghton High School but the program is open to residents in Houghton, Baraga and Keweenaw Counties.

“Voices” begins January 28th and will be held every Thursday at 4:00pm for 18 weeks.

To register, contact the Houghton Outpatient Office of Great Lakes Recovery Centers at (906) 482-7710 or (906) 458-3708 or email dreagor@greatlakesrecovery.org.
