Across the Upper Peninsula, veterans step up within their communities and are remembered for their service to the country. Tomorrow marks the 75th Veterans Day in the United States, which was first organized by a World War Two veteran in 1947 in Alabama. It was held November 11th, at the time was designated armistice day. Today and tomorrow around the copper country many of the region’s veterans halls, VFWs, And American Legion posts will host flag-raising ceremonies, events with area schools, and community meals over the weekend. The first Veterans Day event in the area today begins at 11 am with the Houghton Middle School’s JROTC planning a Veterans Day program. Another event veterans may be interested in checking out tomorrow includes the Veterans Health Fair hosted by the Baraga American Legion Post 444. Later in the evening veterans around the copper country can enjoy some bowling at the Free Veterans Bowling Tournament at Miller Lanes in Laurium. Veterans Day Ceremony – Hancock

Description Hancock High School’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 11:00 at the school gym. Rick Freeman will be the guest speaker, and a question and answer session will follow. Music will be provided by the Hancock School Band. All are invited to the ceremony, and veterans and active duty service member are encouraged to stay for lunch.
Calumet High School Veterans Day Ceremony

Description L’Anse American Legion Post 144 will be serving a free breakfast to all Baraga County veterans, family members, and caregivers. Baraga County Veterans Service Officer Doug Gray will be there, to answer questions about benefits, and offer assistance in applying.

Description The Pressbox Bar and Grill at the Ojibwa Casino in Baraga will host a Veteran’s Day luncheon. The menu includes roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetable, and Dessert. There is no charge for veterans. Others will be asked for an $8 donation, with proceeds donated to the Dominic Jacobetti Veterans Home to provide personal care packages.
Veterans Health Fair

Description Baraga American Legion Post 444 will host a Veteran’s Health Fair. Admission is free for veterans, those on active duty, reserves, adult family members and caregivers, ROTC and JROTC members, and newly-signed service members, and those currently meeting with a recruiter. Veterans can enjoy a free roast beef lunch, and undergo a number of health screenings, including vitals and blood sugars, along with med minder set-ups (with current med list), diabetic foot exams, health education, and assistance with VA paperwork.
Veterans Day Dinner – Calumet

Description Calumet American Legion Post 61 will hold its annual Veterans’ Day Dinner at the National Guard Readiness Center in Calumet. A social hour with hors d’oeuvres will begin at 5:30, with dinner at 6:30 followed by a program.
