Next month Michigan Technological University will host a two-day conference to explore accessability opportunities in the Upper Peninsula. Accessible Keweenaw Initiative Member Jen Shaud says the opportunity to explore the challenges and solutions of accessibility with residents will allow community stakeholders to leave with actionable knowledge to continue discussions within the community.
The UP Accessibility Summit has been sponsored by the Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Joe Freed Endowment Fund, which seeks to support efforts and initiatives that empower autonomy for those with mental, physical, or developmental disabilities. In addition, the summit has gained partnership support from local organizations the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region, Visit Keweenaw, and Michigan Tech. Keynote speakers invited to the summit include Autism advocate and Project Hope Foundation Registered Behavior Specialist, Kaelynn Partlow, and Director of the Great Lakes ADA Center, Robin Jones.
The summit also plans to set aside time to recognize people and groups in the Upper Peninsula working to improve accessibility and will host an awards ceremony for the 2024 UPAS Community Accessibility Awards.
