UPPCO Working On Restoring Power

From the Upper Peninsula Power Company (Updated 9:18am):

Marquette — Working throughout the evening and morning Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) crews have been able to greatly reduce the amount of outages brought on by wintry conditions that hit the U.P. in the past 24 hours. As of around 8 a.m. Friday there were small, scattered outages remaining primarily in Hancock and the Houghton area. UPPCO crews will continue working as quickly as possible to complete outage restoration.

The outages, which largely covered Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Marquette counties, were caused due to trees or limbs weighed down by heavy, wet snow hitting power lines or breaking poles with the help of windy conditions.  At the height of the outage period it is estimated that about 3,500 customers were impacted in Houghton County alone. Additional UPPCO crews were brought in early Thursday morning to especially address the hardest hit area of Houghton county.

Customers are reminded to stay away from downed power lines and to treat them as if they are energized.  No attempts should be made by customers to clear downed trees or branches near power lines. Customers should call UPPCO at 800-562-7809 for electric emergencies and to report outages. For other emergencies, please call 911.

Upper Peninsula Power Company thanks customers for their patience and understanding. For continued outage updates and information about storm safety and what to do during an electric emergency, follow UPPCO on Twitter at UPPCOstorm and visit www.uppco.com.
