The first big snowstorm has hit the Copper Country and safety immediately becomes an issue in these conditions. UPPCO is reminding customers about some safety measures they can take to be safe during bad winter weather conditions. Please report any downed lines to UPPCO and take special care while working near powerlines when removing snow from rooftops. Also, snow can accumulate close to overhead powerlines so children are cautioned to not play on those piles of snow. Always be aware of the condition of your electric meter and make sure snow isn’t being pushed into it. Those with high-efficiency furnaces and water heaters that vent through the wall should be wary of snow or ice buildup around the vent which can cause the system to malfunction or in some cases, can cause carbon monoxide to accumulate in the house. And finally, if you suspect that you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide, contact your local emergency agency immediately. Be sure to purchase a carbon monoxide detector as well.
