UPPCO Issues Phone Scam Alert to Commercial Customers

Marquette – Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) is urging its commercial customers to be aware of scammers posing as representatives of another utility who may call and threaten service disconnection for allegedly being past due on accounts unless a call is made to a certain number in order to provide payment arrangements.

Any UPPCO customer who receives such a suspicious call should write down any information the caller provides and also take note of the call date and time, phone number to call back and any information showing up on caller ID.  In addition, UPPCO customers should not provide any private information, account or banking information.

All customers of UPPCO should contact the utility’s Customer Contact Center at 800-562-7680 anytime they receive suspicious calls. UPPCO representatives can confirm if a call was made to a customer and verify their account status.  If a customer was behind on their bill they would have received a notice in the mail from UPPCO.

Customers can also report any fraudulent calls to the Bureau of Consumer Protection at 800-422-7128. For more information, please visit www.uppco.com and click on Your Business/Safety and view Scam Warning under Quick Links.
