UPEC Funding Local Environmental Programs

Three Copper Country Schools are part of several K-12 environmental education projects that will be receiving special grants totaling $4,000 from the Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition. Among them is Houghton Middle School which will receive equipment and field trips for water quality research with an eye towards impacts from legacy copper mining and urbanization, courtesy of the Huron Creek Watershed Partnership. Other programs receiving grants include Jeffers High School and Houghton High School, which will use their grant money for scholarships for 7th to 12th grade students to attend the Biennial Lake Superior Youth Symposium in Thunder Bay Ontario in May. The Houghton Energy Efficiency Team will also be receiving funds to help support their work through the Georgetown University Energy Prize competition.
