Michigan’s union membership went up in 2015.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is reporting that labor groups across the state added up to 36,000 members last year.
The unions say their main concern right now is what they describe as an attack on prevailing wage.
Ron Bieber is the president of the Michigan AFL-CIO.
He says wealthy people in Michigan invested in repealing the state’s prevailing wage laws and botched it, but immediately had enough funding to start a new proposal.
Bieber says, in his mind, that sets democracy aside and creates a whole new set of issues for the state of Michigan.
The state’s prevailing wage laws require workers on publicly funded projects be paid union wages and benefits.
