U.S. Reps Miller and Walberg Back Incentives to Great Lakes Farmers to Curb Harmful Runoff

Members of Michigan’s Congressional delegation are backing a plan that encourages farmers in Great Lakes states to take steps to stop harmful agricultural runoff.

Crop fertilizers that get into the waterways contribute to toxic algae blooms like the one in Lake Erie last summer that contaminated drinking water in Toledo and Michigan’s Monroe County.

Congressman Tim Walberg says he is supporting a bill modeled on Michigan’s existing program that promotes farmers limiting polluted runoff.

The legislation creates federal incentives for Great Lakes states that adopt similar programs.

Congresswoman Candice Miller is also sponsoring the bill.
