U.S. Coast Guard Encourages Boat Safety on Labor Day Weekend

Ahead of Labor Day weekend, the United States Coast Guard encourages boaters to practice water safety. This week the US Coast Guard’s ninth district in the Great Lakes encouraged mariners to take key steps before getting out, to make sure everyone has a safe and fun experience on a boat. Check safety equipment such as life vests, and make sure everyone on the boat has access to a flotation device. Classifications of different life vests and flotation devices will vary depending on the age of the person. 75 percent of deaths involving boating accidents are a result of drowning, the Coast Guard adds, that 87 percent of those deaths the person was not wearing a life vest. Do not drink and boat. Check the weather before leaving the dock, and remain cautious of wind speeds, direction, and wave forecasts. The Coast Guard also suggests filing a float plan with a friend or relative who can make an emergency call if you do not return on time. A driver must remain sober while operating a watercraft. It is illegal to operate a boat under the influence.
