Ten farms across the Upper Peninsula, including in the Copper Country, are a part of a pilot program exploring new ways to address small farm food certification. The farms are assisting the U.P. Food Exchange and the USDA in developing a Group Good Agricultural Practice (Group GAP) model. A Group GAP works together to achieve the proper food safety certification so smaller farms can comply with federal regulations. Program Coordinator Neal Curran says it was a long and challenging process to make sure the farms are complying with regulations.
By participating in the program, farms will be able to expand their consumer reach. The program includes two Copper Country farms: Anya Farms in Chassell and Wintergreen Farms in Ontonagon. If you would like to participate in the program next year, visit the U.P. Food Exchange’s website.
