Aerial tree trimming around electrical transmission lines is planned for this month in parts of the Upper Peninsula. American Transmission Company says a helicopter and heavy-duty air saw will be used to trim trees along a 138,000-volt transmission line between the Perch Lake Substation in Marquette County’s Republic Township and the Winona Substation in Houghton County’s Elm River Township. The helicopters are equipped with heavy-duty air saws with rotary blades suspended on a 90-foot vertical boom. They already used this system to clear an area from Norway to Perch Lake in Republic last month. The work will be done as weather permits.
