The Keweenaw is a popular destination for tourism, and Visit Keweenaw finalized the numbers for visitor spending for last year.
The total number of visitors stayed about the same as 2021 at 400,000 overnight visitors, but spending increased to about $140 million. This was a 35% increase in spending towards the local economy.
The strong tourism in the winter months from January through March cushioned the decline in the spring and summer due to construction in state parks that restricted overnight camping visitors.
However, because of this, visitor spending through lodging, food and beverage, recreation, retail, and transportation expenses increased due to visitors opting for short term rentals or non-camping lodging.
Lodging represents the single largest spending category at an estimated $41 million, which is followed by food and beverage at $35 million. Transportation costs totaled to an estimated $25 million, with retail following closely at $23 million, and recreation finally totaled to an estimated $16 million.
