Tougher Penalties For Underage Drinking

If you get caught drinking in Michigan and you’re under the age of 18, you face possible fines and a misdemeanor on your record.

With the late night NCAA basketball game involving the Michigan Spartans this Friday, there’s a good chance that could happen, especially in East Lansing.

But a state lawmaker says it’s time to change the law.

The Michigan Senate will see legislation soon that would dramatically change the under age drinking law to wipe out the misdemeanor for a first and second conviction.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Rick Jones, says such convictions are clogging up the court system. The Grand Ledge Republican believes imposing $100 fines on underage drinking for the first two offenses sends a strong enough signal.

Jones, a former Eaton County sheriff, has requested the bill be introduced after spring break…another time of the year when underage drinking can get you in trouble.
