The three youth detention centers in Michigan are again up for closure in the current state budget.
Bay Pines Center in Escanaba, Shawono Center in Grayling and Maxey Boys Training School in Whitmore Lake struggle each year for funding.
State Representative Ed McBroom of Vulcan says that’s because there is an effort to privatize the service. But McBroom says the state facilities are still needed.
The centers house youth ages 12 to 21 facing criminal offense.
McBroom says the solution-focused treatment at the centers is a good alternative to traditional residential treatment.
The detention facilities are a part of the Department of Human Service’s Bureau of Juvenile Justice.
