A third deer has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Michigan.
The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the free-ranging deer was found in Ingham County, within one mile of two other deer that tested positive for CWD.
Chad Stewart, a deer management specialist with the DNR, says the department is currently gathering information to determine how the illness is impacting the state’s deer herd.
The DNR is asking hunters to help fight the fatal disease by having their deer checked and tested for CWD.
Stewart says hunters should also keep an eye out for deer that behave strangely, drool excessively or appear emaciated and then report it to the DNR.
The three deer that tested positive for CWD this year are the first since 2008.
