A teenager is dead, following a shooting accident in Mass City.
The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department was called to a residence in Mass City Friday afternoon at 3:08. Sheriff Dale Rantala report that a 13-year-old male who lives at the home was loading a rifle, which discharged and struck a 16-year-old male who was visiting the home in the back. A 14-year-old male who was also at the residence called 9-1-1. SONCO ambulance brought the victim to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Identities of those involved have not been released.
The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Michigan DNR Law Enforcement Officers, a US Forest Service Law Enforcement officer and Michigan Sheriff Association Victims Services Unit. Although officials have deemed the incident to have been accidental, the incident is not classified as a hunting accident, as those involved were not in the act of hunting at the time.
