Tech Football Wins Fourth Straight – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football Saturday…

  • North Central rolled up a 42-0 halftime lead, and cruised past Lake Linden-Hubbell 60-8. Brady Axford’s fourth-quarter touchdown pass and a Nate St. Onge two-point conversion accounted for the Lakes’ only scoring. The Jets held Lake Linden’s rushing attack to less than 50 yards.

In high school volleyball Saturday…

  • Houghton at the Wrightstown Invitational.
  • Jeffers at the Escanaba Invitational.

The Houghton boys soccer team at the U.P. Invitational at Marquette Saturday – no report.

College Football

The MTU football team dispatched Wayne State 22-7 in the annual homecoming game Saturday. Alex Fries ran for one touchdown, and connected with Darius Willis on two passing scores as the Huskies won their fourth straight game.

The NMU football squad lost 63-14 to Saginaw Valley State Saturday.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will host Ferris State today at noon.

The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team entertains Saginaw Valley State today.

The NMU men’s team hosts Roosevelt University today.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team battled past Saginaw Valley State 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-13) Saturday. Meg Raabe recorded 24 kills, and Tess Hayes rang up 50 assists and 23 digs.

The NMU volleyball squad downed Lake Superior State 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18) Saturday. Jacqueline Smith recorded 22 kills, and set a new Wildcats career record. Helen Beiring added 10 kills.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team grabbed an early lead, and held off Northern Michigan 4-3 in an exhibition contest Saturday night. First period goals by Owen Baker and Nick Williams put the Huskies up 2-0. Elias Janssen scored two goals in the third period. Northern narrowed the gap to one with a tally with three minutes remaining, but couldn’t force overtime. Max Vayrynen and Derek Mullahy combined to stop 24 shots.

MLB

The Tigers collected just four hits, and dropped the opening game of their American League Divisional Series to the Guardians 7-0 Saturday. Cleveland took command early, with five runs in the first inning.

Game Two will be played tomorrow afternoon. Tarik Skubal will pitch against former Tiger Matthew Boyd. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

The Red Wings wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 3-2 loss at Toronto Saturday night. Christian Fischer and Andrew Copp scored for Detroit. Ville Husso made 30 saves.

The Wings begin their regular season Thursday night at home against the Penguins. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Red Wings coverage will start at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons host the Bucks in their first preseason contest tonight. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Packers visit the Rams for a 4:25 game this afternoon.

The Lions have this weekend off.

The Cowboys visit the Steelers in tonight’s game, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
