Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley has laid out a series of recommendations before the State Board of Education on how the state can better its special education system.
Calley, who is chairman of a Special Education Reform Task Force, says for starters teachers should stop using restraints unless it’s an emergency.
He says restraints aren’t meant to be used on a child who disruptive or defiant.
Calley says the task force also wants universities to do a better job preparing teachers to manage a classroom that may have a special education student or two in it.
Other recommendations include using common language when talking to parents of a special education student and to improve services across the board to special education students.
