There are many steps a homeowner can take to winterize their home.
The Houghton Energy Efficiency Team (HEET) has nine of those steps listed in their Winterization Challenge.
Each month, residents are asked to complete one of the steps, like caulking in January.
And if you aren’t sure how to do it, their website (www.energizehoughton.org) has ways to help you.
HEET Energy Manager Melissa Davis said, “We have video tutorials on how to do all these things and some of them seem like they are super simple but there are quite a few people that really are kind of embarrassed to admit that they don’t know how to open a caulk. So, we’re just making it easy for everybody that doesn’t know how to do these things.”
HEET has launched a hardware store campaign at Swift True Value in Houghton, Ace Hardware in Calumet and here at Festival Foods True Value in Houghton
Davis said, “We have these cards that have every point that we’re doing for the next nine months and we’re hoping that people will fill out the cards and then mail them back to us because for the Georgetown University Energy Prize challenge, we are quantifying all the work that we do.”
Houghton County could win $5 million in the competition and taking the challenge could help that effort.
Davis said, “Or, just do the work and feel warmer and more comfortable and save some money.”
