Suspect Dead in Chippewa County After Shooting a Deputy U.S. Marshall During Attempted Arrest

A Deputy U.S. Marshal was shot in Chippewa County while attempting to remove endangered children from a home.


On Wednesday local law enforcement departments, including Chippewa County Sheriff, MSP Troopers, the FBI – Detroit field office, and U.S. Border Patrol agents, responded to a call for an officer shot on scene. The U.S. Marshall Services Special Operation Group was attempting to recover two kidnapped children and arrest Giovanni McNab at a home in Stalwart, Michigan.


During the attempted arrest, McNab exited his residence, shot at officers, wounding a Deputy U.S. Marshall, then returned inside the structure.


Overnight, law enforcement with the FBI, Chippewa County Sheriff, MSP, US Marshall Services, the U.S. Coast Guard Criminal Investigative Services, MDNR, U.S. Customs, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms were able to secure and search the residence.


McNab was located and pronounced dead at the scene. The two minors were found unharmed and placed in the custody of Child Protective Services. No other details have been released pending further investigation. It is reported the Deputy U.S. Marshall is in stable condition
