A local case is set to be heard by the State Supreme Court Wednesday.
The court will hear arguments in the case of Lale and Joan Roberts versus Kathryn Salmi of Salmi Christian Counseling.
According to the court’s website, the Roberts had sent their daughter for counseling by Salmi.
During the therapy sessions, the daughter claimed to remember that her father physically and sexually abused her.
The daughter later also accused her mother of molesting her.
Salmi reported the allegations to Children’s Protective Services. An investigation was conducted but no criminal charges were ever brought.
The parents then sued Salmi for medical malpractice, alleging that false memories of abuse were implanted in their daughter’s mind.
Salmi has denied the accusations.
The Supreme Court will consider if a mental health professional has a duty of care to third parties who might foreseeably be harmed by the use of techniques that cause a patient to have false memories of sexual abuse.
