The Superior Watershed Partnership has received 323,000 dollars in grant funds for improving stormwater runoff in Marquette. The Superior watershed partnership recently received a Great Lakes Grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Sustain Our Great Lakes Program for coastal habitat and climate adaptation that will install green infrastructure and native plant species to control stormwater runoff along 10 miles of Lake Superior shoreline in Marquette. Green infrastructure refers to the use of bioswales, infiltration planters, rain gardens, and other practices for runoff mitigation. The City of Marquette Engineering Department, with aid from the Superior Watershed Partnership, will identify installation sites, finalize project designs, and determine the project timetable. The Great Lakes Climate Corps and Great Lakes Tribal Conservation Corps will also assist with the incorporation of native plant species as recommended by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Natural Resource Department. Throughout the project’s stages, the partnership and the city of Marquette will offer public input opportunities over the lifespan of the project.Find more information here.
