The Superior Watershed Partnership and Great Lakes Climate Corps open wildfire risk reduction efforts to communities throughout the Upper Peninsula. Recently the Superior Watershed partnership and the Great Lakes Climate Corps announced that local units of government, tribes, and qualifying private land owners will become eligible for free wildfire risk reduction assistance. The SWP and GLCC will seek to use the program’s funding by 2026 in a variety of ways that include conducting property assessments for fire risk and clearing a buffer space around buildings and infrastructure. The mitigation efforts will also include removing small trees, brush, and woody debris for Elderly, disabled, or economically disadvantaged residents as a part of the residential program.
The program will follow practices set out by the National Firewise program with the National Fire Protection Association. The SWP also plans to provide community outreach and education materials for wildfire mitigation and protection plans. The wildfire mitigation program is funded through the Cross Boundary Wildfire Mitigation Program with 288,000 dollars of support and with the Lansace Scale Restoration Program grant worth 124,000 dollars.
